Using the iPad for a location shoot.

So when I first looked at getting an iPad, being able to shoot tethered with it was the only justification for buying one.. However it didn't. So I walked out without one.

A month later I was walking out the shop with one. Tethered shooting isn't possible still but as a preview tool it works.
Using the camera attachment and the USB cable for the Canon 5D it's possible to quickly upload an image from the camera to preview.

I like to usually apply a rough edit in lightroom when I'm normally tethered to my Mac pro. Gives us a feel for how the final image will look.
Using the "Photogene" app you can apply similar edits.

Its not perfect but it is an alternative..... And much better than just the preview screen on the camera!..

All in all the iPad is a great piece of kit in my opinion.
Especially partnered with the myfi from "3"

Digital re-touching service

As part of our digital workflow every image passes through Photoshop for retouching.. whether it be colour balance or reshaping they all have minor adjustments that bring out the best in the image.

We are now offering re-touching services as a stand alone product to other photographers.. or anybody else that needs images retouching!

How it works..

Image files can be uploaded onto our shared "Dropbox" space from where we can retrieve the files. The larger the file the more information we have to work with so ideally the RAW files direct from the camera would be ideal.

We request a list of specific changes you would like making or general instructions. At this point we will return a quote detailing the costs and a completion date.

If you are happy to proceed with the order.. e-mail a confirmation to us and we will schedule the work and return an order confirmation.

Once your images have been edited we will upload a low resolution watermarked image back onto dropbox where you can download the file for viewing and approval.

We ask for payment to be made at this stage prior to the final high resolution non-watermarked images being released.

Job done..
We will keep your files on back-up for 2 months after which they will be removed.

Our rates for retouching are £10/hour with each assignment being quoted on an individual basis.

Take a last look around at a place that holds a lot of memories from the last 2 years both good and bad..

Shut the door..

Hand over the keys... iso25 have left the building never to return.

Onwards and upwards!!!! I've vowed that the next studio will be bigger and better.

Thanks to everyone that has been involved in the studio from creation to closure, from those who worked hard behind the scenes to those working hard in front of the camera..
As they say all good things come to an end! Roll on the opening party of the next creation..

Where next...?

For me the next 6-8 months are about location location location.. Time to get a little more creative with location shoots and to concentrate on securing some new commercial clients throughout Sheffield.

Time to move away from TF shoots and concentrate on building the business.

As one door closes

So as of Monday the studio will be no more.. The place I've lived and breathed for the last 18 months is now an empty shell with only small hints remaining of what it once was. Sad times.. But as one door closes hopefully shall another one open!

We took the decision to move closer to the city of Sheffield based and will be looking for a new home over the next coming months..

Were going down a slightly different path in that were looking for other creatives or photographers to collaborate on the new studio space. If you think you might be interested in studio space in Sheffield then let me know..!

93ft Design Nonnas packaging

This week Ive been working for a new client.. www.93ft.com

93ft Design put together the designs for the new food product range for Nonnas restaurants in Chesterfield and Sheffield. (www.nonnas.co.uk).

The brief was to produce product photography for the new range of Italian food products ranging from Olive oil through to rice.

The images were to be used for 93ft Designs's marketing purposes and also a number of images were required to enable them to put the designs forward for various awards.

Also images were required for use on a new e-commerce site hence the neutral white background.

The project took 3 days with an extra 2 days of post production.. Quite a few late nights and far too much coffee..

Shooting with petrol generators

This week we were shooting at a location without power readily available so looked to generators for a solution.

After some research on the web we decided it would be a bad idea to use any old generator for fear of voltage spikes and damaged flash heads.

The guys at www.honda-generator.co.uk were more than helpfull.. Absolutely first class service.

I took 2 Bowens Gemini 500w heads along for us to test with. With both heads running at full power we were pulling roughly 13amps for a second or two whilst the heads recharged.

We then added extra load via a load bank to simulate the Apple G5 powermac and screen I wanted to use.

The upshot was that the generator handled 2 heads and the extra load with no problems at all.

During the shoot we were using the following kit from the generator with no issuse:

Bowens Gemini GM500 heads x2

Apple Mac G5 dual 2.3GB Pro tower

Apple 20" HD cinema monitor

Lacie External Hard-drive

Powered speakers

For the third flash head which was used at various points we used a Bowens Travelpak.

The generator was running from roughly 9.45am through to 18.00 with a sustained shooting time of roughly 3 hours. The generator only used half a full tank of fuel which was approximately £10.00.

It is advisable to use a generator only in a well ventilated area.

These are only my personal experience of using a generator with flash heads. Please ensure you test your kit thoroughly and always take advise from the manufacture when using equipment for purposes other than that it was intended for.

Alternative to Apple mobileme

Decided not to renew my mobile me subscription and see if there was anything out there that would do the job equally well but free..

Came across fruux.. fruux basically enables you to sync a number of macs across the net much like mobile me does. At the minute its free and they plan on adding support for the iphone which at the minute is lacking.

After trying it for a day or two it seems to do what it should so...

Anybody wanting to wirelessly sync the calendar, contacts and Safari bookmarks on multiple machines without paying for mobileme, give it a try. Back things up first though!!

Studio open for business

It took 3 months of hard work to finish the creative space that is now our studio. Many thanks to all of the people that helped throughout the project.

Would I do anything different if we repeated it?
As far as the layout is concerned then no.. not with the space we had available.
Would probably try to get more people in to help next time and be a little more realistic with the budget..

Other than that we are pleased with the space weve created and have had a lot of positive comments regarding the space.
